Skuldelev 6 - Viking Fishing Vessel

The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 6 was a small coastal ship, probably used for fishing or trading. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built on the west coast of Norway around the 1030's CE, and so ended it's life far from where it was built. It had also undergone modification during its use period - at some point a seventh strake had been added to the ship, to increase the freeboard and perhaps make it more seaworthy. This reconstruction is of how the ship might have looked soon after it was built, with only six strakes.

No stem or stern posts were found with Skuldelev 6, so it is uncertain what the ends of the ship looked like. The original reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum, the 'Kraka Fyr', used stepped stems like those found with the Skuldelev 3. They also made an alternate reconstruction, the 'Skjoldungen', based on a type of stem from the same time period found in western Norway. This model is based on that second reconstruction.

This is also my first attempt at animation! The ship's rigging moves as you change the sail orientation, and drivers and shapekeys let you raise and lower the sail. All renders are done using Eevee.
